Turn intellectual knowledge into embodied understanding
You cannot teach or authoritatively recommend what you have not practiced. The best way to teach PRT to patients is to do the work yourself. Data shows that clinicians who have gone through their own pain experience have more client success than providers with advanced psychology degrees who only learned tools in a classroom. This five-session, live interactive class prioritizes practicing tools so that teaching patients becomes effortless and authentic.
Taught by Brad Fanestil, MD, this 7.5-hour workshop covers cognitive reframing, mindfulness, self-compassion, guided imagery, metacognition, and self-awareness through didactics, experiential exercises, and Q&A. Learning objectives include:
- Review studies on the mind-body connection, including mindfulness, epigenetics, and predictive processing.
- Discover your own mind-body connection by practicing simple body awareness and somatic exercises.
- Master a framework to understand PRT in the brain and how to “talk to your brain”.
- Uncover the value of expressive writing to enhance self-awareness.
- Learn to change fear habits with curiosity.
- Discover the neuroscience behind self-compassion with exercises to “kindle the neurons” of compassion.
- Discuss the difference between compassion and empathy, and how to approach this with your empathic patients.
- Practice guided imagery for fatigue, dyspnea, pain, and GI issues.
- “Step back” and observe a change in relationship with your thoughts with metacognition exercises.
- Learn to introduce these concepts in a brief, 20-minute appointment.
- Learn to practice exercises with patients in a longer (30 – 45 minute) session.
